Llega
a medir hasta un metro con veinte centímetros de longitud.
Es de un color de fondo marrón con bandas transversales de color marrón-rojizo
bordeado de negro. Las bandas no se encuentran en el tercio trasero.
Se dispersa por Darjeling, Sikkim, Assam, India; Sichuan, Yunnan, Hong Kong,
Hainán, Taiwán, sur de China; Burma, Tailandia, Laos, Camboya,
norte de Vietnam, Tíbet, Nepal, Pahang, Pulau Tioman oeste de Malasia,
Singapur, Sumatra, Indonesia.
Cuenta con ocho subespecies.
